Smart Tips for Weight Loss

Tuesday, January 04, 2011 3:58 PM

You only have to look around online to see that there is a huge collection of websites that deal with issues regarding weight loss and weight management and that published on the majority of them are more tips for weight loss than you could shake a stick at. That doesn't mean they are all usable or even useful, although a great majority of them are. But what it does mean or at least should mean to you is that there is no one way of losing weight. Not only that, but there is not even a particular method or plan that will work for everyone and while one plan may work well for one person, it may not work well for another.

The reason for this is simply because people are not all alike in every way and their needs will be different with regards to the amount of weight they need to lose, what their starting weight is, their height, build, sex, age, lifestyle and a whole host of other personal characteristics that go to making up the person themself. So you can see that there are a huge number of variables to contend with when trying to find the right method to suit you personally and why a program that your friend may have successfully lost weight with might not work so well for you.

But don't be discouraged by this. It doesn't mean that losing weight should be any harder than doing anything else that needs to be done on a personal level. In fact, when you work with yourself and understand exactly what your personal needs really are, the whole process can actually become a lot easier than you at first thought. One thing that is fairly static is the fact that there is a physical law that governs the way that a person's weight is maintained and that law is the same for everybody. It goes something like this:

When you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight

Few statements about any aspect of weight loss can be taken with such certainty as that one. What it is saying is that when your body can burn more calories, which are units of heat (we use it as energy) than you are providing it through the food that you consume, then you have to lose weight because your body can't create mass out of nothing. You gain weight through eating more than your body can process and dispose of, with the excess being stored as fat. It is this fat that builds up over time and increases your body weight while making you look flabby and loose, with unsightly wobbly bits all over the place! As you turn this around and start burning the excess fat that you have stored by forcing your body to burn more calories than you are getting through your diet, then your weight will gradually reduce and the flabbiness will also reduce.

Of course, if you have become very overweight or obese, the time line is longer and you will find it takes a lot more to reduce your body's bloated appearance. You should not try and do this too fast because if you have been overweight for some time, your skin will have stretched to accommodate the larger size. It will not go back into place quite as easily as you may like and if you try and lose the weight too quickly you could end up with a lot of loose skin hanging off your body, which is as unsightly as it sounds.

So losing weight should be a slow and steady process, and definitely not rushed. Along with eating a calorie restricted diet, you should also get some daily exercise. This not only helps your body process the food you eat more efficiently, but it will help strengthen your muscles so that they in turn burn more calories faster while toning up your flabby body to tighten up the loose bits so you end up looking better. You still can't do much about stretched skin except to make sure your weight drops slowly enough to give your skin a chance to keep pace with your shrinking body's girth!

Losing weight should be done the smart way and by following these useful tips, you will not only lose weight the right way, but lose it safely and not end up looking like one of those hairless dogs with all the multiple skin folds all over its body. Sure you can hide some of it with clothes, but what do you do when summer comes and you want to go to the pool? Right. All the more reason for losing weight the right way!
